Scent of Herbs - Claude Michelet

Pierre-Edouard is in his eighties, but though his heart is failing, his ming is as busy as ever trying to keep the farm and village of Saint-Liberal alive. With his son Jacques literally breaking his back to make the farm pay and his other children scattered around the world haunted by a yearning for travel ,the villagers reluctantly begin to see that their best chance of survival lies in tourism rather than tradition. Eventually, the pull of their roots is too strong to resist and the Vialhers return - ironically to discover that traditional farming for the gourmet produce provides real hope for revival.

And then, when his first great-grandson is born, Pierre-Edouard can safely leave the future to the next generation...
